CHARACTER
NAME: Vayne Carudas Solidor.
AGE: 27 years old.
CANON & CANON POINT: Final Fantasy XII. Ordering Gabranth to head to Pharos.
HISTORY: Wikia.
PERSONALITY:
In another life, Vayne may have been a great and good ruler but thanks to growing up in the Archadian Empire, he became a ruthless pragmatic instead.
He is cold and impartial not only to everyone around him, but to himself as well. Like, at the time when the Senate was plotting against him, he concocted a scheme in order to remove them from power and elect himself as Emperor. It involved forcing his father to commit suicide, and killing a Senate leader. All of this was neither a means to garner power nor get revenge on anyone. It was, instead, what he felt was best for House Solidor and the Empire.
"Is this your idea of vengeance?"
"It is my idea of necessity."
Years ago, the Emperor ordered Vayne to kill his two older brothers which Vayne carried out. His father came to realize what sort of monster that he had made his son into -- someone that did not even harbor any hatred or anger for past wrongs done to him, but instead only thought of even himself as little more than a pawn to move forward to ensure the prosperity of others. As Larsa said, the men of House Solidor were taught to put the needs of others before their own. Vayne is the extreme version of what this means.
His father was ill and Larsa was the only one who would be able to take up his mantle should anything happen. With the Senate attempting to remove him, it would place Larsa immediately in their machinations. If his father was well and hale, if there was someone else in line, Vayne would not have argued having his title and power stripped from him if it would be for the good of the Empire and his house.Granted, he is pleased about finally being rewarded for all his hard work by being given the title and power of Dynast-King, but he willingly gives up that singular reward for all his sacrifices when he thinks the goal has become unachievable for him.
He is not without a heart, however. Vayne does sincerely love his younger brother, Larsa, and wish to protect him from the cruelty of the Empire. The only problem is that he does not know how to go about doing so. He considers himself to be the sword in the dark -- to strike where his brother should and cannot; to remove Larsa's enemies before they even are able to appear before him.
Like, ordering the complete annihilation of the Resistance, Vayne was not just thinking of the conflict between Archadia and Dalmasca. He was thinking also of the ongoing conflict between Rozarium and Archadia, as well. The two nations had been constantly pitting against one another, and in showing the cruel destruction of the Resistance; it would send a message to the entire world to not start conflict with the Empire.
If there had only been upset between Dalmasca and Archadia, he would have agreed to the surrender of the Resistance and considered peace talks. The way that he thinks is far wider and greater scope than what most. Should the Empire give into the peace talks when they have the advantage, it would make them appear weak and soft-hearted to their other enemies. He says it best that he believes that they would only rise up against them later, and it is best to have their defeat be complete and absolute to make the message that the Empire will show no quarter to Her enemies.
Yet, at the same time, he wants more for Larsa. He wants Larsa to become a better ruler; he wants Larsa to be safe from all things that would corrupt him. He wants him to be as he must and should be. Yet he doesn't know how to watch over him beyond what he knows -- which is to carve the "peaceful path" that Larsa wants in the shadow of the blood Vayne spills. And he is even willing to have Larsa come to hate him, if it means to keep him safe.
But he is not so cold-blooded and heartless to not know how he should act. The manner in which he presents himself is different than how he actually is. Vayne is exceptionally good at both reading people and the mood of any given situation. With what information that he has available, he attempts to have himself be viewed in the best possible light. If he is viewed favorably, it means that he can move with ease. Like when he first comes to Dalmasca to be its consol (de facto ruler), he makes a point to speak to the people. He does what he can to charm and ease the hearts of the citizens – enough so that he receives shattering applause after his impromptu speech.
And it does not even there, either. He continues to act as a friendly, shockingly approachable person by inviting Migelo to dine with him. The reason he does so is Migelo obviously has ties throughout Dalmasca; if he is treated well by him (for people will ask what happened), this will spread throughout the people as rumors further bolstering his presence and appeal. Vayne often "sees ten minutes into the future," which is to say that he sees how his response or reaction will spill to cause another event and so on. He attempts to make all those events be beneficial to him. This may not always be possible, but he works hard to make sure that it will be.
Also, he manner in which Vayne speaks is a trip in of its own. He speaks extremely self-assured and confident, because he is both of these things for certain. But he uses a lot of doublespeak when he talks. So much so that generally a person has to know him for quite some time to understand what he is actually saying. He can speak about assassination attempts right in the open without anyone else in the room knowing what is being ordered. This actually did happen when he sent Gabranth to "investigate" Lady Ashe's intentions find out if she's wishing for war or peace.
Essentially, he was ordering Gabranth to kill Ashe in front of everyone. Yet to everyone who is listening, it sounds as though he is only wanting to seek out what type of individual that she is, and if she is someone who wishes for peace, he is one to work with her. This is how good he is at hiding his real intent, and his command of speech. He knows how much he can and can't say; he knows what he can and can't get away with and works within those lines to force people into situations they cannot get out of.
Vayne is in complete control of his emotions and only lets slip what he wants. Rarely has there ever been a time that he reacts in a way that is overly emotional or emotionally fueled. He views everything in such an impartial and cold way -- though, not his canonpoint, when he is about to die and only wants Venat to find another host to continue on with their plan versus pleading for the entity's assistance to continue living. Yes, he is pleased about finally being rewarded for all his hard work by the possibility of given the title and power of Dynast-King, but he willingly gives up that singular reward for all his sacrifices. The ends justify the means in his mind. It doesn't matter how one gets to the result, just that the result happens in the way that he wants it to.
Like, he would have been feeling proud and happy about how things happened with Larsa. Larsa has become the new Emperor and there are no more forces that would dare corrupt him; he is free in a way that Vayne never was. The end result that he wanted for his brother was achieved even though it cost him his own life, and he never got to see the fruit of his labor. This is fine for him, because he doesn't necessarily need or want to be rewarded for what he does which is what makes him such a terrifying person.
The monster he is can be considered one of practicality and necessity. He is the way that he is, because he needs to be the way that he is. When he killed his two brothers, he was not rewarded for his actions. The people of the world came to condemn him as a murderer and he was offered no power or title. He had to continue to work to be appointed anything at all. This helped shape him to be a person that doesn't seek out anything for himself but seek out an ending that is most beneficial to his and his own. He doesn't view anything that he's doing as "wrong" or "evil," but a means to an end. He is able to bear the burden of rule because he does not consider the morals of his actions, but only what will result.
While he is fighting for others, Vayne does not allow the opinions or feelings of those he is fighting for distract or stop him. If he believes what he is doing is right, he will keep going with the plan no matter the cost. No matter if those he cares about come to hate or revile him; he will keep going. As was said, he isn't seeking out reward or personal fulfillment; he is only doing what he is doing for them and doesn't matter how they end up viewing him.
The man Vayne could have been is one that would have been a great Emperor to Archadia. He is someone who never once thought of what he wanted, but only what he wanted for others. Yet his upbringing and mentality twisted him completely to the monster that he is now. A monster that he does not even recognize himself as being.
ABILITIES/SKILLS:
♠ When he is being faced in combat, Vayne uses his fists instead of any conventional weapon to fight. He is surprisingly a brawler who excels at close range combat and quick attacks. There is an explosive amount of power that he has that can do significant damage to someone who attempts to fight him unprepared.
♠ He does not know any magic and can only reply on healing from others rather than capable of healing himself. But he has very little trust in other people to assist him if he is truly in dire need. So, he's poured all his focus onto honing his body. Even cut with a sword, he does not falter or seemingly acknowledge the pain (his armor and iron will assist in this feat). There is no weakness that he has to any particular element and he is immune to most status ailments. In particular, it is interesting that he is immune to poison -- having presumably poisoned himself until he grew a tolerance.
♠ As Consol and son to the Emperor, Vayne has learned well how to exist and move within Archadian politics. It is a cutthroat society that does not reward anyone no matter what blood a person has; it only rewards their capabilities and Vayne has been shown to be quite capable.
INVENTORY/COMPANIONS: Only his armor.
FACTION CHOICE: Moon Temple.
REASON: Vayne is one that attempts to gather as much information as he can in order to know how it is that he can proceed. He's pragmatic to a fault and only goes with what is most logical versus what will make him the happiest.
TATTOO: Waning moon on the back of his right hand.

It would seem as though we all find ourselves whisked away to another world.
… I apologize. I do not mean to write what is known and act as though others do not know it. But rather to start a conversation. I am certain I have never heard of yours nor many of you know of mine. Yet here we are. So … I wish to know more about those that have come with me. I wish to hear more of the worlds that you come from, of who you are, and hope that we can come to bridge the gap between us.
We have only but each other now … yet I feel that is more than enough. I am not alone and you are not alone. We are already doing better than we were when we first awoke, is that not right?
